OUR ATELIER

Norlha’s Atelier was established in Ritoma, a village 3,200 metres above sea level in the Gannan Tibetan Prefecture. Today, the community of Norlha Atelier has evolved to just over 100 local and highly skilled artisans and employees trained in house, with women making up 65% of the team. What began as a few shuttle looms has grown into an atelier with spinning, hand weaving and hand felting sections. Focused on meticulous quality, low-impact processes and innovative design, Norlha is inspired by Tibetan culture and our community of dedicated artisans.

In reverence to the yak and yak khullu, Norlha continues to develop and innovate with this rare and precious fibre, discovering new ways in which to express our shared appreciation of, and responsibility for, yak fibre.

WEAVING

Weaving at Norlha represents both continuity and innovation – a bridge between ancient Tibetan craft and global textile evolution. The atelier’s looms are flying shuttle looms, brought from Nepal, where the technique was introduced through British influence.
This technology, originating in 18th-century England, revolutionized weaving by allowing broader, more intricate textiles to be woven with greater speed and precision. Norlha brought these looms over the Himalayas, along with trainers, to introduce them to local nomads – merging new methods with centuries of inherited skill.

In Tibet, spinning and weaving were once the quiet winter work of farming families, who spent the cold months indoors transforming lamb’s wool into narrow, finely woven strips on back-strap looms. Certain areas, such as Lhokha in southern Tibet, gained renown for their woolen fabrics, prized for their rarity and craftsmanship. These textiles, dense and lustrous, were so valuable that they were purchased only once in a lifetime and passed down as heirlooms.

By introducing flying shuttle looms while preserving the spirit of hand-weaving, Norlha continues this lineage – expanding both the scale and possibility of Tibetan weaving, while keeping the rhythm, touch, and integrity of craft rooted in the plateau.

TAILORING

Until two decades ago, nomads across Tibet made everything they owned and wore – sewing their chubas, shirts, boots, and tents by hand, and bartering only for essentials
like flour or cotton. Norlha’s tailoring section, established in 2012, builds on this
tradition of self-sufficiency and care in making. Today, 21 women and one man work in the section, where all training takes place in-house. It can take up to five years for an apprentice to become a skilled tailor, learning the precision and patience needed to work with yak khullu. Each piece is the result of steady practice and quiet attention.

FELTING

Felting is one of humanity’s oldest crafts, binding fibres into fabric for daily use. Among Central Asian nomads, it provided waterproof shelter, rugs, and clothing – an essential part of life also practiced in Ritoma, where women felted sheep’s wool into mats, boots, and raincoats.

Norlha was the first to create felted yak khullu products, trusting the fibre’s natural softness and strength to redefine felt for modern interiors. By combining traditional handwork with adapted machinery, Norlha’s artisans developed felts of varying thickness – from dense wearables to our lightest 200-gram fabric backed in cotton.
Sixteen women, all with nomadic roots, now work in Norlha’s felting section. Their skill and innovation have transformed a pastoral craft into refined pieces that are contemporary, tactile, and enduring.
