Colours of the Plateau

For most Tibetans, red is an auspicious colour of the sacred realm. Tibetan women celebrate red in the coral they wear - one of the five sacred stones of Tibetan Buddhists - symbolising life force energy and seen to bring success in life. While a spectrum of reds find their place in temples and monasteries, darker shades of red and orange belong to ordained monks and nuns, and adorn religious buildings, usually in the form of a frieze made of neatly cut brands stacked over beams, painted in a deep earthy red. Red, the symbol of achievement, wisdom, virtue, fortune, and dignity.

COMPOSITION IN DETAIL

Handwoven at Norlha Atelier using yak khullu sourced from local nomad cooperatives. This piece was made using the khullu of 1 yak. khullu is the ultra-fine, downy undercoat that keeps yak insulated during harsh Tibetan winters. Each summer, the yak naturally shed this down, which is then carefully collected by hand.

100% yak khullu.
