Milarepa and Meditation

In the year 1040, in Kya Ngatsa in the region of Gungthang, a son was born named Thopaga. Soon after, his father passed away, leaving the little boy and his mother to face great hardship. In time the boy grew and learnt dark magic, wreaking destruction and revenge on the land.

Later, filled with remorse for this wrongdoing, he formed a firm resolve to practise the Dharma. Alone, he travelled to Lhodrak, where he met Marpa the Translator, Chökyi Lodrö. The lama made him undergo great hardships for the sake of the Dharma, such as building the nine-storey tower of Sekhar. But Thopaga followed everything the lama told him, and for nine years devoted himself to meditation through fierce austerity. Along the way he gathered unequalled experience, embracing patience through hardship and endurance. For nine years he fixed his attention on a single point, and carried out a perfect practice of meditation aimed at liberation and the state of all-knowing enlightenment.

This man, who gave his whole life to meditation, brought a new understanding to the riches of the human mind: wisdom, intelligence, patience and perseverance, and came to be known as the great yogi of the Tibetan Plateau, Jetsun Milarepa.
