The Moon and the Moon Goddess

Long ago, there lived a girl of exceptionally good heart. She always gave help to the many beings who lived around her, and so people called her the Goddess of Pure Intention. But as the old saying goes, ‘where gods dwell, demons dwell too.’

A demoness, burning with malice, set out to harm the girl of pure intention, chasing her baring sharp, fathomless fangs. Terrified, the girl fled. Looking upon the open sky before her, she saw the moon rising, peacefully. She turned towards the moon, and with a plea asked, "beloved moon, moon of my heart, please save me from this terror!" The moon, which lights the way for all beings travelling through the dark of night, felt pity for the girl's suffering. It let down a strong rope of starlight and drew the girl to safety. At that same moment, the demoness, disguised as another girl, turned her face up towards the moon and begged, ‘please let down one more rope for me to reach your lap as well.’

To free the world of the demoness's malice, the moon let down a rope twisted from wool. Overjoyed, the demoness grabbed the woollen rope and climbed towards the moon. But just as she reached the middle of the sky, the woollen rope broke. The demoness fell from mid-air and crashed to the ground. From this moment on, the girl of pure intention resided on the moon as its companion. At night, she scatters white moonlight and strives to dispel the darkness, praying for happiness on Earth, leading her to have a new name; the Moon Goddess.
