They decided that the source of happiness lay in the respect of others. ཨོཾ་མ་ཎི་པདྨེ་ཧཱུྃ The Buddha Blessing depicts the most recited and ubiquitous of all Buddhist mantras, oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ. Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ is a praise to the four-armed Avalokiteshvara (translated as ‘the lord who looks in every direction’ or ‘the lord of what we see’), the Buddhist deity of infinite compassion and mercy. The mantra invokes ‘the jewel in the lotus’, the jewel being the wish fulfilling gem (or cintāmaṇi), and the lotus representing purity. Either spoken aloud or sounded internally, the mantra is believed to create a connection to Avalokiteshvara and induce a higher level of spiritual awareness. The Tug Nga included is a Protective Knot. Protective Knots come in various sizes and colours. The five colours, red, yellow, blue, green, and white, for the four elements and the sky, are often included, knotted with a bit of sheep wool or yak hair. Knotted with blessings from a lama, nomads will wear them for protection or attach them to animals that have been spared from slaughter.
