The White Water of the Eighth Month
But the great god could not come in person to the land of humans. So he took the form of the star Rishi, travelling across the open sky. He turned the many life-essences of the medicines he held in his hands into light, and scattered it over the lap of the earth. One by one, the drops of light drifted down. Where they fell on the land, green medicinal herbs sprang up on the mountains and meadows. Where they fell on the water, the clear streams and little channels grew rich with the essence of medicine.
At that time, in that land, there was a man so tormented by illness that, in his misery, he sank into the water. Before long, the man who had suffered so much was made completely clean and well. From that time on, water was held to be the finest of medicines. Every year, while the star Rishi is in the sky, people go into the water and wash their bodies, and they count it as a healing treatment. And so, in time, this season came to be called the White Water of the Eighth Month.
