The Contest of Brother Wind and Uncle Sun
The sun raised its strength, yet the wind rose up out of the valley, swirled around the mountaintops, and showed off his great body across the sky. The sun called out, ‘Brother Wind-boy! How good that you've come today, how good that we two should meet.’ The wind answered with a whistle, ‘I'm the wind-bo , and I go wherever I please. I can do whatever I think and whatever I want. But you! Wherever you want to go, the rope of dawn is tied round your neck, pulling you along.
The sun glowered, ‘Brother Wind-boy, let the two of us have a contest.’ Delighted, the wind bobbed up and down. The sun pointed to a traveller walking a long road. ‘Let's each use our strength. Whoever can get that traveller to take off the hat and coat he's wearing wins.’
The wind began to tug at the traveller's hat and coat. But far from taking them off , the moment the wind blew, the traveller pulled his hat and coat tighter and held them close. The wind tried again and again, yet the traveller never took them off .
By then the sun was about to cross over a high mountain. ‘Brother Wind-boy , I'm not free to come and go as I like, so I can't finish today's contest, until tomorrow.’ And with a fond goodbye, the sun slowly crossed over the pass.
